Palma de Mallorca

http://visitapalma.blog.galeon.com/img/patios042.jpg  Oficial Licensed Guides  of Mallorca offers a selection of cultural and historical guided tours of the city. From its superb monuments to Jewish quarter, history is revealed with the added touch that their staff are indeed locals themselves; multi-lingual guides that accompany you on a sunny morning or star studded summer evening, telling tales of intrigue and wonder of a life now past.

Tour guides  are truly passionate about their  job. Let them take you through the peaceful streets of the old town and learn about the rich heritage of its buildings, plazas, palaces and courtyards, past the ancient city walls down to the cathedral.

They will show you what the streets are really hiding and provide a global view of the historic and artistic career of a city with many faces. From the Plaza Cort, Palma’s oldest square, past the Santa Eulalia church, curiosities that would certainly be missed if you go alone are shared.

Then venture along Palma’s oldest street and discover what used to lie below the foundations of the magnificent houses that now line it.

Hear the legends of the dragons, see mystical carvings and enjoy a wealth of historical information you would never find in any guide book, before arriving at Palmas Cathedral and then finally on to La Lonja ( former stock exchange market ) to see the signs left of passing days .

Show Caves of Spain

Description

Cuevas del Drach is the most famous and best visited cave on Mallorca. The reasons are probably its outstanding features, like the wealth of speleothems and the impressive underground lake. It may also be a result of very good marketing, but the cave is really worth a visit. There are numerous stalactites and stalamites of pure white colour. At some parts of the ceiling, the stalactites are covered by helictites, on others there are fragile soda straws.

The cave visits are scheduled hourly, visitors walk on their own into the cave. The tour is more than two kilometers long, so there is not very much time to reach the Lago Martel. The chamber of the lake is equipped with seats for about 1,000 visitors, who listen here to short concert with classical music. There is also the possibility to make a boat ride, but this is voluntary.

http://visitapalma.blog.galeon.com/img/drach.jpeg

The concert is held by some musicians on three boats, who glide silently into the lake to play their lake concert. They play Alborada qualleqa by Caballero, Plaisir d'amour by Martini, Tristesse, study 3 opus 10, by Frederik Chopin, and Barcarola from Hoffman's Tales by Jaques Offenbach. The music is available on CD.

It seems, the opinions about this cave differ very much, they are controversial. Many people regret that there is not enough time to enjoy the cave and its speleothems, others think the concert is kitschy. At the end everybody has to make up his own opinion. To avoid the crowded times, it is probably a good idea to take the first or last tour, or visit the cave during the winter.

The name Cuevas del Drach is, of course, derived from the dragon. The first inhabitants of Mallorca gave the dragon rather different attributes: on one hand, he is evil, a sort of devil, on the other hand he is a symbol for strength. This second aspect was definitely the reason, why King Jaime I is shown on the medieval paintings of Francesc Comes and Pere Nisart with the dragon on his helmet. In the medieval legends, in the Rondaies mallorquines, the most important collection of mallorcan fairy tales, the dragon has a third aspect: he is the sentinel of a treasure. With his horrible looks, snake like body and bat like wings, and his enormous strength, he defends the treasure against intruders.

The cave was visited during centuries, an example is a cave visit by two tourists from Barcelona in 1878. They astrayed, although they had a local guide, and they nearly died of starvation in the cave.

The most famous name in the history of the cave is  E.A. Martel. He arrived early September 1896, after an invitation of Archduke Ludwig Salvator, who lived in Miramar. On the 9th September he entered the cave the first time. Until then three chambers where already known: Cueva Negra (Black Cave), Cueva Blanca (White Cave) and Cueva Luis Salvator. At the end of this third chamber was a place called La ventana (the window) where terra inkognita started.

La ventana allowed a view on an enormous lake. Martell used his new developed gear, which were in fact two boats, to cross this lake, which is today called Lago Martel (Lake Martel) to his honor. He was rather impressed by this silent boat tour on one of the world's largest subterranean lakes, 177m long and 30m wide. Lago Martel has a temperature of 17°C and is a little salty, which proofs a subterranean connection to the Mediterranean Sea. Behind the lake he discovered a new part of the cave, today called Cueva de los Franceses (Cave of the French), also to his honor.

The members of this expedition where Martell, his companion Luis Armand, Fernando Moragues, son of the cave owner, and Pedro Bonel de los Herreros, grandson of Ludwig Salvator's steward.

Why a private tour guide ?

You're smart - While the masses are taking tours with hundreds of other passengers, travelers in the know arrange private tours. Get the information you need and experience your destination like an insider.

 http://visitapalma.blog.galeon.com/img/offers.jpg

http://visitapalma.blog.galeon.com/img/imagen03011.jpeg

You're in control - You choose the time of your tour. You decide which sights interest you the most. You decide when to stop to rest, shop, eat or explore in further detail, all at your own pace, with your guide always ready to give advice.

You're engaged - You can get closer to details and enjoy personal conversations geared directly to your interests.

You're inspired - Local guides love their cities and cultures and want to share that love with you.

You're a guest - That's our philosophy! You'll stop being a tourist and become a guest.  It's like having a friend in Europe to take you under their wing and show you what only the insiders know.

http://visitapalma.blog.galeon.com/img/vall.gif

You're value conscious - If you are a small group, it's maybe a little more expensive than the cruise line's bus ride, but so much more worth it! If you have a large group, a private tour is always the best value.

You won't be fooled - With large tour groups you are stuck to their schedule, right down to the forced gift shop visit. Sometimes they pass up the most interesting details about a sight because it would be impossible for everyone in a large group to see it.  And if you can't hear the guide, or you fall behind because the pace is too fast, you're just out of luck. On your own you walk around with your nose in a guidebook.  None of this happens with a private tour!hem with you.

You're satisfied -  You get the experience of a lifetime because your private shore tour excursion is personalized just for you and like no one else's.

These tours are chauffeured tours and depending on your port include a tour leader, a driver guide or a licensed guide, all of whom speak fluent English. In many cases we can also arrange a tour in Spanish. These private tours are operated with luxury non-smoking, air conditioned, sedans, minivans, minibuses or full size coaches. So we can handle a private tour for two or a family reunion trip for sixty or more.

International Museum Day

REVOLUTION ON INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM DAY
18th MAY 2008

ICOM ensures that May 18th will be the largest-ever international gathering of museums.

The International Council of Museums (ICOM), announces this year’s theme for International Museum Day :“Museums as Agents of Social Change and Development”. For the first time since the celebration was created in 1977, ICOM is inviting museums to take action in museums around the globe both in the real world and in the virtual world.

Alissandra Cummins, President of ICOM states: “While traditionally museums are known for their collections, more and more museums are taking an active key role in exploring social issues with communities to contribute to their development. The educational and ethical function of the museum is to engage culturally diverse contemporary communities through exhibitions and workshops and their design. International Museum Day shows that it is possible to gather together in a new way to interpret the past in light of the present to shape a better future.”

In 2007, approximately 20,000 museums in more than 70 countries already participated in the 30th International Museum Day with activities, partnerships, and events connected to “Museums & Universal Heritage”. This year, to better express changes in society and explore development, ICOM is inviting the world museum community in Africa, Asia and the Pacific, North America, Latin America, and Europe to create activities in their museums based on this theme and to gather in new ways to celebrate International Museum Day. The Patios Tour in Palma

http://visitapalma.blog.galeon.com/img/imagen033.jpeg

The "patios" in the Palma stately homes, from monumental beauty and lavish impressions, make up a unique architectural space where time stops and life appears, capable of atracting and surprising the eye of their visitors. The historic centres are architectural redoubts which bring to mind a refined and cultured Majorca with its own personality.

The "patios" of the Palma stately homes make up a unique architectural space, with its own, different aesthetics without which the old centre would lose its identity which characterises it. That is why Palma is above all a city of patios.

These semi-public places were marked by a social and even economic life. The Palma "patios", above all those which belonged to private families (Most of them), have today become inaccessible to pedestrians, this being the main sad thing that this century has given to the history of the patios. Some have railings that allow contemplation from the street and only those buildings that have been turned into museums, cultural foundations or diverse civic centres can be visited without restriction.

This is the reason that in this itinerary around the Stately Palma, we will only highlight those patios that can be visited or observed easily. This visit will take us to the small back streets with the highest historic lineage in Palma. The seats of noble families, properties of influential names within the Palma bourgeoisie where many of these small palaces from the XVI,XVII and XVIII centuries are still inhabited.
The Palma patios are a result of the evolution through the history which began in roman times, coming to a fore in the XIII century and reaching its peak in the XVII and XVIII centuries after reforming the main Palma stately homes of the era in the renaissance style of the that time.

Due to the darkness caused by the amount of narrow streets that the old part of the city of Palma de Majorca is famous for, the houses were built with an interior patio to function as a skylight and around it the whole house was erected. The house became an element of social prestige that showed the importance of each family and its social standing. One of the most important aspects of these patios is the stairway that increases the grandiose effect of the stately home.

The social role of the used to offer water and shade during the summers and shelter from the rain and a play area for the children and an open air discussion area for the adults. The "patios" played an important role in the social life in Palma, they were even used to announce an important event, if the gate was left ajar it meant that one of the residents had died, later the clothes and personal possessions of the deceased were auctioned off. This custom was maintained until the end of the XVIII century, as they were semi-public places that the neighbours used freely and without having to ask the owner permission. If on the other hand the gates were wide open and decorated with plants and flowers, it announced the birth of a child.
