Palma de Mallorca

http://visitapalma.blog.galeon.com/img/patios042.jpg  Oficial Licensed Guides  of Mallorca offers a selection of cultural and historical guided tours of the city. From its superb monuments to Jewish quarter, history is revealed with the added touch that their staff are indeed locals themselves; multi-lingual guides that accompany you on a sunny morning or star studded summer evening, telling tales of intrigue and wonder of a life now past.

Tour guides  are truly passionate about their  job. Let them take you through the peaceful streets of the old town and learn about the rich heritage of its buildings, plazas, palaces and courtyards, past the ancient city walls down to the cathedral.

They will show you what the streets are really hiding and provide a global view of the historic and artistic career of a city with many faces. From the Plaza Cort, Palma’s oldest square, past the Santa Eulalia church, curiosities that would certainly be missed if you go alone are shared.

Then venture along Palma’s oldest street and discover what used to lie below the foundations of the magnificent houses that now line it.

Hear the legends of the dragons, see mystical carvings and enjoy a wealth of historical information you would never find in any guide book, before arriving at Palmas Cathedral and then finally on to La Lonja ( former stock exchange market ) to see the signs left of passing days .

International Museum Day

REVOLUTION ON INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM DAY
18th MAY 2008

ICOM ensures that May 18th will be the largest-ever international gathering of museums.

The International Council of Museums (ICOM), announces this year’s theme for International Museum Day :“Museums as Agents of Social Change and Development”. For the first time since the celebration was created in 1977, ICOM is inviting museums to take action in museums around the globe both in the real world and in the virtual world.

Alissandra Cummins, President of ICOM states: “While traditionally museums are known for their collections, more and more museums are taking an active key role in exploring social issues with communities to contribute to their development. The educational and ethical function of the museum is to engage culturally diverse contemporary communities through exhibitions and workshops and their design. International Museum Day shows that it is possible to gather together in a new way to interpret the past in light of the present to shape a better future.”

In 2007, approximately 20,000 museums in more than 70 countries already participated in the 30th International Museum Day with activities, partnerships, and events connected to “Museums & Universal Heritage”. This year, to better express changes in society and explore development, ICOM is inviting the world museum community in Africa, Asia and the Pacific, North America, Latin America, and Europe to create activities in their museums based on this theme and to gather in new ways to celebrate International Museum Day. Stained Glass

Colour and Light in Gothic Palma Cathedral

http://visitapalma.blog.galeon.com/img/patios025.jpg

It is not surprising that in the Middle Ages an art form was developed in which the brilliance of simple colours is married to the brilliance of light. The developement of Gothic arquitecture which led to the virtual replacement of wall  by window provide the opportunity for combinig pictorial embellishment with intense luminiscense.

It helped that Light was often cited as a metapfor for God , and even believed to be a manifestation of the deity .

Despite the concerns voiced by austere monastic oders that such sensuous stimulation might detract from focusing on God , bishops and lay patrons gave free rein to the creative possibilities of brilliant, multi-coloured glass . Its beauty seems largely to have been indivisible from the cognitive understanding of symbolism, delight in colour was remarkably direct and uninhibited.

Light was other source of immediate aesthetic uplift - The light of the sun , the glitter of gold and polished surfaces and all forms of luminosity.

This tour will show you the color significance the conflicting aims of richness of colour and illumination of the interior, the meaning, symbolism and narration, revelatory of the fundamental shifts which occurred during the course of the Middle Ages in theology, intellectual outlook and society generally.

Palma Carthedral Colours and Numbers

The metaphysical significance of the numbers in Palma Cathedral

http://visitapalma.blog.galeon.com/img/corpus105.jpg

The basis of many churches is sacry geometry and proportion. Numbers had a metaphysical significance, and were thought to have occult power. Every aspect of the medieval cathedral utilized that significace: the number of pillars in the choir, the ratio of the levels of in the triforium, etc. Rose windows are no exception to this rule. The triangle means stability trascending duality. Our rosewindow composed of twenty four triangles twelve of them represent the shape of six pointed star.

The most visual presence of the three in the cathedral is the one of its architectonic structure , it is a cathedral of three naves, the cathedral can be perceived like the conjunction of three churches.

1.The first that was constructed named Chapel of the Trinidad, there is above, to  where the pantheons of the mallorcan kings are located

2.Second , the  Royal Chapel, where it is now the altar and presbitery.

3.Third it arises when the construction is tripled and appeared the building of the three aisles.

There are three the rosewindows , entering by the greater vestibule.

There are three the most excellent lampadarios,

1.the one of the seven lamps on the episcopal chair,

2.the one of the octogonal crown of the baldaquino on the  greater altar and

3.the one of lucerna conical truncated in center of the central nave.

Number three is not absolutely strange to the cultural patrimony of the Church.

The Christians adore a trinitary God

1.Father,

2.Son and

3.holy Spirit

Three are three teologal virtues - faith, hope and charity.

Not only the Christian cultural patrimony has been constructed, partly, on the paradigm of the three. The old civilization celta counts on the three spirals of the Kristel, Dante divided in three parts the Divine Comedy, are famous the three laws of Newton.

The great reform that Obispo Campins proposed to the artis Antonio Gaud formulated through a triple charge:

1. to obtain an altar for God,

2. a chair for the bishop and

3. a great space for the people.

A day in Majorca

Cruise passengers

Shore excursion in Palma de Mallorca. You have the same freedom of movement as if you were on your own, but without wasting your precious time finding your way around town ....

For the Med. we felt we made the best decision in spending for the private tours since the attractions and cities were further apart from the ports where the ship docked. Plus there is so much more to see and take in as far as history goes in the Med., so we were glad to have a local explain it all to us and not have to worry about the logistics of train schedules on our own or be held up by the crowds on the ship's tour.

Perfect shore excursion : We pick you up at the pier. Show you around the main Sigts . For a whole morning or afternoon or even for a full day, before driving you back to the pier

Culture is an ever-present element in the life of the island. All year round there are festivals, concerts, literary competitions, exhibitions, recitals, theatre performances The city of Palma de Mallorca is the cultural and artistic centre of the island, and is outstanding for the excellent conservation of its historic centre. Be sure to take a stroll around the old town and enjoy the varied, entertaining nightlife. Every year, Majorca's charm attracts famous politicians, film stars, personalities from the world of fashion... they make the island their holiday destination.

Majorca has excellent communications by air and sea. Airlines from numerous countries operate out of its Son Sant Joan international airport, eight kilometres from Palma. The island also has transport links with the rest of the archipelago and the Spanish mainland via boats and scheduled ferry services that sail from the ports of Palma and Alcdia. These excellent communications mean that from Majorca you can make visits to other Balearic Islands, such as Ibiza and Minorca, with return day-trips possible

The Jewish quarter itinerary is designed to offer tourist, visitors or residents a chance to discover one of the most important jewish quarters in the medieval Mediterranean, inhabited by sages, doctors, astronomers and cartografers Jafuda and Abraham Cresques.

This itinerary is designed to last approximately two hours in order to guarantee suitable management, with the aim of highlighting certain especially relevant aspects to be observed by the official guides who will lead the tour.

The best tour  of Palma de Mallorca for your group could be the icredible Jewish Quarter "el call " in the old Alfama of Medina Majurca.

You will imagine how the " xuetes" (Converted Jews) used to live and how they were
organized in social levels Those of the "orella alta "  (High class) or those of
"orella baixa" (Lower class). They  lived in the ghetto untill  the last pogrom
(1391). Then they were forced to convert  by the Spanish Inquisition . Some of them
continued as "Cripto-jew", and it was  not until the end of the 17th century
that the label "xueta" was truly  earned and the whole community was properly
      Catholic.
The Xuetes have historically been stigmatized and until the first half of the
20th century practiced, and were seen aligated to practice, strict endogamy.
Today, an estimated 18,000 people in the island carry Xueta surnames
